    Default Install spring counterbalances

Tom Silva has a video, http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/vide...051635,00.html, showing how to replace rope/pully/weights arrangements on windows sashes with spring counterbalances. In the video the cutout where the counterbalance will be inserted has already been made.

My windows are bare (no weights ever used and no cutout) but I bought these same counterbalances and need to make a slot in the side trim so I can mount the balance. Does it make sense to drill out as much of the cutout with Forstner bits as I can and trim the edges with a chisel?

Yes, or you can use a router, template, and pattern bit.
