Default Can I do this over plaster?

I've got your typical plaster/lathe walls. It had wallpaper - then paint - then wallpaper on it, until my wife removed it all to bare plaster.

I've drywalled before(and have a large container of mud in the basement), but never plastered. Can I skim coat a layer of the mud (joint compound, mud, drywall, whatever you want to call it) directly over the plaster, or does it have to be plaster on plaster?

We plan to paint the finished product.

You can skimcoat the wall with joint compound and sand it smooth and paint. The compound is just softer and could scratch or dent easier depending on how thick it is. Hope this helps?

Yes, that definitely helps. I was pretty sure I could, but needed a second opinion.
