When is it too cold to stain a fence?

    Default Re: Fence staining Temperature

    Gator,

It is always best to follow the manufacturers instructions on the label. However, in general, most paints and stains state above 50 degrees is fine. Some go as low as 35 degrees.

In the Fall, it is good practice to stop earlier in the afternoon so that the the paint or stain can have time to set before the really cool night temps. In Summer, you try to stay out of the Sun, however, in Fall it is often adviseable to stay in it so that the surface temps are warm.

Often in Fall, you will get heavy dew on the house siding or fence in the nighttime. The better cured the paint or stain, the better before the dew forms.
