Default Why space at top of crown?

In many older home I have seen crown molding installed with a narrow gap between the crown and the ceiling. It was done deliberately because the gap is uniform. Why is it there? I have a couple theories but would like an educated answer if someone has it. Could settling/separation problems be counteracted by leaving the gap? Or is it just a design idea?

In days of old, a "picture rail" was installed with a gap from the ceiling, from which pictures were hung. I've seen the gap anywhere from the top of a door jamb to within 1" of the ceiling.

    A. Spruce, thanks for the thought and picture. Looks like that is the reason for the gap. Makes sense since older home were usually full 3/4" plaster which makes driving nails for pictures pretty tough and eliminates the holes left in the wall when you move the picturs.
