Default warm downstairs and cold up stairs

i just bought and older house and the upstairs is colder than the downstairs. there is only 1 vent and thats in the upper part of the stair way and we always leave the door open downstairs. i was just wondering what i could do to keep the upstairs warm like the downstairs? thanks!

Not much to work on from your description, but I would assume that you have a forced air heating system. Since it does not seem that you have enough heating vents installed in the upper portions of your home, you may want to, in the short term, let the hot air rise in your home.

Leave the doors open on the first floor that lead to your upstairs area. You may also want to close the vents on the far side of the down stairs area so that the air pumps out more towards the vents on the part of the house that lead upstairs.

I'm not an expert on HVAC systems, but this is what I would try at first blush. I'm sure others on this board are a little bit more informed on the specifics of your problems.
