    Question Tank-less Water Heaters?

I live in Northern Wisconsin. We just bought a house and the hot water heater should be replaced sometime in the near future. I'm considering converting to a LP Tankless hot water heater. The house is a tri-level and the mechanicals (furnace and hot water heater) are located in the crawl space under the ground level floor. Can anyone tell me if its even possible to install a tankless heater in a crawl space? I swear I read somewhere that you need to install it in an area with 8' ceiling for proper amount of air or something. The other thing that concerns me is I've read some reviews that the tankless water heaters fail in the colder northern climates. Any advice or experience with these units will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As far as I know, there's no impediment to installing a tankless in a crawl space.

But I think you should base your decision on several factors:

    1) if you can, combine the heating system with the HWH so that you have just flue losses from one appliance.

You say you have a "furnace"--is this forced hot air, or do you have forced hot water for heat (boiler).

    2) Check with local real estate agents, neighbors, relatives, etc. who live in your area & can advise of the best equipment to use according to the fuels available in your area.

    3) Could you post the square footage of your house & the fuel used for heat now.

    4) instant hot water heaters often require a high rate of gas flow to operate properly--which would require a special installation.

    5) One of the sites below is by another member who lives in your area of Wisconsin, perhaps he might help.

    6) Some sites below have a calculator that considers the RECOVERY rate of water heaters and PEAK USE issues that have to be considered according to your family size.
