    Default too many roots

There's a large tree on the other side of the sidewalk in front of my house. The roots have caused the sidewalk to buckle, and I beleive they contribute to the sad state of my lawn. I need some ideas on how to get rid of this root problem so that I can have beautiful green grass. The city has repaved the sidewalk area recently, but I'm sure the root problem still exists.

I know nobody ever wants to hear this, but about the only thing you can do is remove the tree. The root and water competition and shade are probably making the lawn look sparce. Professionally thinning and limbing up the tree may help with light to the lawn. It won't do anything for the root/sidewalk problem. If the city will replace it periodically maybe it won't be that much a problem.
