Default Sump Pump Drainage Pipe Help!

What do I do with my sump pump drainage pipe on the outside of my house? It runs through the middle of my yard. I burried it and ran it to a stone filled pit, which worked for 6 months until a heavy rain. the pit filled and the water backed up the pipe and the pump could no longer pump which resulted in the sump pump basin overflowing in my basement. Please, any suggestions? did i do the right thing but just need a bigger pit?

There absolutely needs to be a check valve installed after the pump to prevent that situation. As for where to run the pipe that can be a problem, a ditch, low spot, french drain are some possible areas.
