We just bought our house and found that the living room carpet that rests on top of a concrete slab is developing a serious mold issue and needs to be replaced very soon before it becomes a larger issue to our home and family's health.

Ventilation and minimal natural lighting are issues for this 14' x 20' living room with a brick fire place: There are no windows. There is one slider leading to a screened in porch, but lack of airflow is a noticeable issue especially in the summer as we experienced this year, and we have to run the lights during the day so it doesn’t feel like a dungeon. In addition, our current heating system is baseboard hot water, so tapping into an existing ductwork infrastructure to improve airflow mechanically is not an option.

We’re thinking tile might be the way to go to prevent mold from returning as we may not have the means to install new flooring and windows simultaneously, but we're concerned that tile on slab will be a total heat suck during the winter months and create poor acoustics for our media room. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Many thanks!
