My husband and I are building an Arts & Crafts bungalow, and we are trying to remain as true as possible to the craftsman aesthetic in choosing our materials. However, our three Bearded Collies, who range from 40 to 60 pounds (which means some rough-housing and LOTS of hair), are creating some challenges in that effort.

My husband and I both want solid hardwood floors - not engineered or laminate - on the first floor of the house. We are leaning towards hickory as a wood choice because of its hardness.

My question is: should we install a pre-finished hardwood product (because of the strength of the finish) or a site-finished floor (which would enable us to use the talents of a local craftsman and perhaps avoid a floor that looks manufactured)? Are there other wood choices or finish products that would create a strong enough finish for a site-finished hardwood floor to stand up well to the shenanigans of our three dogs?
