i am getting tile for our backsplash, my problem is what to do about our drywall. it has paint and mud on it. should i replace it with hardibac or sand it down to wall? will my tile last just putting it on like it is? i need a little direction before i continue can youi help?
I would not replace the drywall if it is in reasonably good shape (not water damaged, crumbly, etc.). Even then, for a backsplash, I would replace the bad spots with drywall, not cement board. Mud the drywall seams from your repair and sand down the high spots on the drywall mud, it does not have to be perfect by any means since you are covering it with the tile. You just want it level so that the tiles can be set flush to the wall when "bedded". I put a coat of primer over the latex paint that was there on ours prior to tiling. Then get the pattern and layout figured out and tile away.
