Default Extending hearth by 4 inches

We are planning to install a fireplace insert and the installation requires a 18 inch clearance in front of the insert and we have around 16 inches. We don't want to put hearth pads but would like to extend the hearth by using ceramic tiles. The current hearth is made up only with bricks and would like to add a border of ceramic tiles around it to make it more than 18 inches. The area around the hearth is carpeted and underneath it is plywood. How would i go about going installing tiles?

    Thanks in advance.

You can cut away 4" of the subfloor and install strips of cement board on which youcan install the tile. Do not use latex thinset.
