Default Replacing a bathroom faucet but washer is too small

We have an old porcelin, pedestal sink from the late 1800's. It currently has a hot faucet and a cold faucet but we want to change it to a single faucet since there is a center hole. We bought a faucet we liked and the span will adapt (it has a 12" widespread) but we have 2 problems: 1) the brass washers for the handles and faucet are too small for the existing openings and 2) the pop-up drain doesn't fit since there is no overflow. I'm OK with not having the pop-up drain since we've never had one anyway but I do need to resolve the issue of the too small washers. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As long as the fixtures themselves cover the holes, get a large fender washer or cut a square piece of wood slightly larger than the hole and drill a hole in the center the right size for the fixtures and use it as a washer, slid it up on the fixtures then the washer and nut that came with the fixture. Put a ring of plumbers putty around the hole before you install the fixtures.

Oh , and if you are at all handy make the wood washer like pictured below so the fixtures won't slid around if the nut is a little loose.
