Question revamp a cracking brick fireplace suround

A friend of mine recently suffered a house fire. The heat cracked most of the red brick around the fire place. He would like to cover it with marble tile. I suggested he remove all the loose brick, which will be major, and fill in the hole with some sort of patch. Would this be an approved method? And if so what should be used to float the low spots?

Cut out the cracked brick and replace with new brick; since he's planning to tile it he shouldn't worry about color match. He can pre-fill the mortar joints and float the surface smooth with the same thinset mortar he will use for the tile itself. For setting a few brick he could use a ready-made mortar mix, no need to buy a 80 lb. sack of bricklock and a separate bag of sand.

Remove not the ancient landmark, which your fathers have set.
