    Question What is this?

Just starting to make our recently purchased home more 'us' and I'm not a big fan of these random fixtures in the living room (painted over to make them stick out less as seen in photo), so I started hammering. The small front piece screws off and the entire piece lifts off to show what's in the attached photo. What are these? Lighting of some sort?

    Thank You

looks like old wall sconces. if there are wires inside make
sure they are dead (terminated somewhere else) before covering
    over.

DwarfWytch, you couldn't be any farther off this time. This is nothing but a blank canopy covering an unused lighting box, as crosby87 suggested. (I'm assuming that these are on the wall, for sconces.

The old electrical boxes (after gas lighting) didn't have screws to attach light fixtures. Instead, there was a center-mounted bracket, which was used with extensions, adapters, & fixture brackets to attach the light fixture. Occasionally, the old gas pipes were used instead of the center bracket. I have occasionally found (in old Chicago houses) that the gas pipe was still live, just capped off. (Extremely unsafe, to say the least.) Frequently, when the sconces were removed, the boxes were just plastered over, live wires and all.

ttrraaccyy9, you might think about reinstalling some period sconces. They would be totally appropriate for your house, since they were there originally anyway.

You're exactly right. You're looking at an adapter that was screwed onto the fixture "hickey" that was attached to the back of the box. The adapter was probably supplied with the blank cover plate.

Thank you all for the input. I'm going to have the wires checked out for power soon and hopefully get some nice lighting up and running.
