Cold Air Return Insulation
There is a cold air return running under my first floor. Underneath the floor is an unheated garage and laundry room. Inside the cold air return is a thin batt of fiberglass insulation. Of course after 45 yrs it is very dirty. If I remove the insulation, should I replace it with more insulation?
Please email the answer to Murray1381@hotmail.com. Thank you
Re: Cold Air Return Insulation
Yes. Insulate any ductwork, return or heat run in unconditioned areas. We use R-11 duct wrap for these purposes. Before re-installing insulation, seal all joints with furnace mastic. If joists are panned over for returns, also seal the joint where the joist and floor meet with a bead of caulk.
