    Default Bi-level stairway

I have a bi-level house and the railing between the steps was very loose, only toe nailed in, so I removed it years ago. The railing above the foyer that runs along living room wall needs redone. I have grandchildren now, and the spindles are too far apart.

I have been debating on just closing both areas in with studs and drywall instead of rails and spindles. If I decide to close it all up, both walls would only be at 40 in or so, not all the way to ceiling.

I would also like to remove the post at top of steps. I don't think it's structural, but worried new half wall won't have enough sturdy support without it.

Anyone with similar situation and pictures of new, I would be great to see them.

    Thank you for any responses.

Looking forward to any opinions you can give.
