    Default Running new wiring

I have a signal outside light in the center of my garage which Id like to take down and replace with two sconces on either side of the garage. I am wondering how to safely and by code (NJ) run new wiring from the old light to the new sconces. My plane is to remove the old fixture and close up the hole, run the old wire into a new junction box and from there split the new wiring to the sconces. Any help would be greatly appreciated

It sounds like you pretty much have it covered. The old light is no doubt mounted to a junction box with the open side out. I would pull the box and mount it inside with the opening side in. Connect your two runs to the wiring in the box and run to the two new lights. Buy a cover plate for the box. As always make sure the power is off while working on the circuit.
