  1. Poll: Re: Log in or register to vote for the May 2013 cover of This Old House Magazine

Cover B is nice, but it's perhaps more of a decor picture, not really a picture that might encompass the kinds of projects the TOH audience might appreciate. So I vote for Cover A.

    Which webcams?

Which webcams does TOH use on it's projects? I'm interested in setting some up for my upcoming renovation of a 50's rambler. I've got a neighbor's house with a chimney that's in perfect view of the...
  4. Sticky: Poll: Re: Log in or register to vote for the August 2012 cover of This Old House magazine

Hard to vote hear because there's a lot to dislike about each of them.

For one there's the inane placement of the microwave below counter, ever try to read the panel using reading glasses?

Re: raise exhaust pipe from furnace?

Thanks for the link. For that model it appears an external length of up to 28' of uninsultated PVC is possible. Right now I've got under 4' exposed to the outdoors. Adding another 2 looks like it...

Re: raise exhaust pipe from furnace?

Given that's a brick-on-block wall using a vent setup like that would be way too much hassle to install. If it were just a vinyl sided wall, sure.

But I don't need to move the vent 'bad enough'...

Re: raise exhaust pipe from furnace?

I don't think it'd be wise to change the direction. Going one way would point it toward an adjacent chimney. The other would be toward an open-able window and a wall-mounted hose winder. My goal...

Re: Forced air - uneven heating this winter

The open door and still cool phenomenon makes wonder how poorly that room is insulated. Perhaps an inspection by someone with a thermal imaging camera could shed some light on that.

    And since...

Re: raise exhaust pipe from furnace?

Agreed. Fire and carbon monoxide poisoning kills far too many people each year. Were I looking to make bigger changes I'd certainly hire an HVAC pro.

The change I'd make would probably make...
  10. Re: Radiant Subfloor Heating - Nails Protruding Through Subfloor

If you only had a few nails to deal with then a Dremel might do the job. But if there's a lot of them you'll go crazy replacing the cut off wheels all the time.

You might also use a Rotozip with...

Re: Forced air - uneven heating this winter

Where's the return air coming from for the small, cold, room? What are the registers in the other rooms? Two supply, or one supply and one return?

If a room can't effectively turn over it's...

    raise exhaust pipe from furnace?

I've got a high efficiency Carrier 9200 furnace with two PVC pipes (intake and exhaust). The system works fine. The problem is the exhaust pipe elbow sits at about 3' off the ground and points...

Retrofit new lock onto old door

I need to install a new lockset into a wood door that has an older, larger mortise lock. The old lock is a much bigger assembly. It's about 5" tall and extends about 3" into the door. The new...
