    Re: leaky foundation

Around here it is discharged into a seperate storm drain. No Sewage is allowed.
Many older subs did mix both and this has led to overflows of treated sewage into the rivers. The seperate systems...

    Canuk,
I used to respect his knowledge as well, but this post is so full of his opinions, I almost don't believe he wrote it.

Re: Walls in Basement / Floor in Basement

You don't really need mesh or rebar in a basement.
Code does call for 4" min. thickness of concrete. I verified this with my brother in law who is a concrete guy. This is for MI and may vary in Il.

    Re: leaky foundation

This is just wrong on so many counts it is ridiculous.
There are thousands of houses with indoor sumps. Everyone that has one is "a little loopy"?

    Re: Dual Insulation?

Gable vents are frowned upon here. (mi) As you want soffit vents for intake and ridge vent or cans for exhaust. You don't mention if you have any soffit vents or even an overhang.
  8. Re: Furnace Room's Fresh Air Intake Comes From Attic

    No, this is not normal.
The usual route for a fresh air intake is off of the cold air return to the outside wall of your house.
Have an hvac contractor cap the duct in the attic off and creat a...

    Re: Cedar Trim

A tinted stain would be better as the tannin in cedar doesn't get along with paint. It peels and flakes.

How big is this existing basement window? A standard 32x16?
By slab do you mean that just flat concrete with no foundation or a concrete floor in your new crawl space?

    Re: need crawl space access

You'll need more than just a "crossmember"
You'll need to fashion a header, with joist hangers for the cut joists, additional joists to double up the joist on at least one end if the opposite one...

A sump pit is the way it is done around here. (mi)

    Re: engineered lumber

They will make them as long as the trailer they carry them on. You'll have to check with their engineering dept as 40' is a lot to clear span. You'll likely need a midspan support. It may be possible...

Just a little add on to Jacks post.
