Re: What is it? Interior phone equipment

Well, they came out and tuned up the box and fixed the ground. We did some tests and at least right at the outside box I am getting the max that they are selling me, so that's good. I'll get some...

Re: What is it? Interior phone equipment

We have Frontier here. They have a few levels, but in my neighborhood they only offer the lowest. I'm guessing the fastest one they can guarantee. I tried a cable modem from TWC that was the same...

Re: What is it? Interior phone equipment

The phone company is going to come out and check up on the NID box and make sure it's all ok. Just to confirm then, if the exterior NID is setup correctly, then the old ceramic DEMARC in the house is...

Re: Creaking stairs with a catch

Hmmm. Oh well. Guess they cut corners in 1924 too. The treads are 5/4 oak. Looks like I'm out of luck short of ripping down the ceiling underneath.

Re: Creaking stairs with a catch

Ugh. If that's my only option, then I think it's time to just put a basket of earplugs at the bottom of the stairs. :)

Re: Creaking stairs with a catch

I need to measure but they aren't abnormally wide; they seem fairly standard and comfortable.

Re: Creaking stairs with a catch

Nope. And the ceiling below was just patched, replastered and repaired a year ago after fixing a leak in the upstairs bathroom.

    Creaking stairs with a catch

So after watching Silva's video here on those snap off screws to help quiet creaking stairs, I ordered some and sat down to try them out. The main stairs on my 1924 foursquare creak like crazy. They...

Re: What is it? Interior phone equipment

So here is the inside of the NID box outside. The older wire heading into the house is the one on the right. I'm not quite sure where this is grounded....

Re: What is it? Interior phone equipment

The line from the pole to the house was replaced a few years ago when it was damaged in a storm. That's when the NID box outside was installed. The old wire going into the ceramic thing is connected...

What is it? Interior phone equipment

I'm trying to figure out what this device is that my phone wires are going into in the basement so I can replace it with something modern. The phone line from NID outside enters the house and is...

    Replacing awning on side door

I'm looking for a little construction advice. The side entrance to my house has an aluminum awning over it that has been beat up by years of ice and snow. This season it bent down far enough that the...

Re: a safe Medic Alert bracelet

Yeah. I'm thinking of a tight fitting bracelet as my best bet right now. I think I'll try one of those neoprene ones first since they are cheap just to see how it works.

Re: a safe Medic Alert bracelet

I thought about it briefly, even though I hate tattoos. The same EMT guys said they've seen a bunch on people but they usually ignore them now because tattoos are so prevalent these days. I know a...

Re: a safe Medic Alert bracelet

While they are commonly sold, it seems like anything dangling would be a bad idea and I don't like wearing any jewelry so a necklace seems out to me. Ankle is an interesting idea, but I was reading...

    a safe Medic Alert bracelet

I've recently decided that I need to start wearing a Medic Alert bracelet or it's equivalent again. However, I stopped wearing the bracelet I once had when I started to get into woodworking and using...

Re: Stumped on installing self-closing hinges

Fencepost, our brains work alike. I just read your post and actually tried a similar idea last night. I found an aluminum trim nail that fit in the hinge joint just right to make the hinge sit flat...

    Stumped on installing self-closing hinges

I'm in the middle of a kitchen refurb and I'm replacing the old, worn out 3/8" self-closing inset hinges with new ones. Naturally the new one's holes don't match up with their 50 year old fore-bears...

    Re: Narrow cabinet ideas

Hehe. Good point. I may go the trim/filler strip route. Maybe a half wall on the other side of the fridge that matches up with the wainscoting and chair rail around the rest of the room may tie it...

    Narrow cabinet ideas

I've got a small kitchen (approx. 10' x 10') and we had to place our refrigerator in a corner. Because there is a window where the refrigerator door swings open, we have to move it away from the wall...

    What size furnace

I've hear Richard on the show say over and over to not buy a furnace that is too big or too small for your house. I'm looking to get rid of my oil fired forced air system and switch to natural gas,...
