  1. Re: What type of pro for crawlspace isues?

Thanks to you both for your replies. I agree that there is an excessive amount of moisture (the existing vapor barrier isn't helping much). What type of pro do we call to address whether re-grading...
  2. What type of pro for crawlspace isues?

We have a damp crawlspace. Our house is 14 years old. The musty/moldy odor can be smelled on our first floor now. The insulation also has what one vendor called "powdered sugar mold" on it. ...

    Quality Bathtub Brands?

In your opinion, what manufacturers make a really good acrylic tub? In my search for a tub for our bath remodel, I'm running across a some brand names I recognize (Kohler, for example) and an awful...

    Re: Project Quote Question

Glad to hear this is an option. I got push-back from one contractor who said it made no sense to do a labor only quote. I told him that I generally found quotes with included material allowances to...

Re: Advise on buying new tub?

Thanks again, everyone, for comments. I will say that I'm having a heck of a time finding any articles/website discussing/comparing thicknesses of acrylic as pertaining to use, longevity, etc. Does...

    Project Quote Question

If the customer has already priced or purchased their selections, is there any purpose for a general contractor to include material selection allowances in the bid? Is there such a thing as a labor...

Re: Advise on buying new tub?

Are there different "grades" of acrylic tubs? I'm seeing some that look the same but one is $900, another is
$1400, yet another is $2500. The sales associate couldn't satisfactorily explain the...

Thank you, everyone, for your thoughts and suggestions. I was just going to post a follow-on question to ask if there are different thicknesses of acrylic/fiber tubs and see that the last two posts...

    Advise on buying new tub?

We're remodeling our bathroom and I thought I'd ask you experts about the tub.

What tub material would you recommend that keeps the water warmest longest and what material would look the wear...

Hanging light fixture above a tub?

We're preparing to remodel our master bath. The tub is centered under a window in an alcove. Currently, there is a pot light centered in the ceiling above the tub. I got a strange look from one...

  13. Free standing tub or undermount tub with surround?

So, as I plan our master bath remodel, I'm keeping an eye on the future and considering how my choices may affect our eventual re-sale.

Specifically, I'm wondering if those of you in the trenches...

Thank you, everyone. I'm glad to hear that there's a possibility of finding plumbers out there that know bid fees are bad for business. I'll keep looking for them...

    Hopelessly old fashioned?

Am I totally out of date in expecting not to pay a plumbing company to bid on a job we need done? It seems that every company I call charges at least $75 to quote a job (refundable if we choose...
  16. Re: Hills popping up in our composite floor deck on hot days

Thanks, dj. I'm REALLY hoping to find another composite plank of much higher quality/longevity to replace our failing decking. Having another wood surface to upkeep just isn't on my list of wants...
  17. Re: Hills popping up in our composite floor deck on hot days

It appears our composite planks are by Epoche Decking. The contractor's quote states it is by Tamko, but there's nothing about Epoch on the Tamko website or any relevant search results on google...

    Re: Remove cabinetry before tiling?

Thank you, dj. I'm with you -- I don't want the cabinets to feel too low and would prefer the tile go under the cabinets (and not block in the dishwasher!). Much appreciate your help!

    Re: Remove cabinetry before tiling?

I will do that, thanks. Because the area below is unfinished, we'll be able to reinforce the joists if necessary.

Back to the original question: is it standard operating proceedure to remove the...
  20. Re: Hills popping up in our composite floor deck on hot days

Yes, we have a lot of work ahead of us given my bath, kitchen, and deck questions!

I figured we'd have to replace the decking, but I am wondering why this is happening when we went along fine...
  21. Re: Switch shower and toilet areas without re-plumbing drain pipe?

    Thank you for this info.

We will definitely hire out the entire remodeling job. It'll pretty much be a "gut" job, so if the floor needs to be cut into for plumbing, that's okay. And,...

  23. Hills popping up in our composite floor deck on hot days

Almost 10 years ago, we had a roofed/screened porch and an open (non-roofed) deck built onto the back of our house. The porch and deck flooring is a composite plank.

    Two years ago, during the...
  24. Re: Switch shower and toilet areas without re-plumbing drain pipe?

Good to know. So, we'd need to re-plumb the (new) toilet location drain pipe, correct? Or are you saying that's not possible without replacing the pipe serving the toilet all the way out to the...
  25. Switch shower and toilet areas without re-plumbing drain pipe?

I have no idea what our homebuilder was thinking (spec home), but our shower enclosure is smaller than the enclosure where the toilet is located. When we remodel this bathroom, we'd like to switch...
