    Re: Open floor plan stairs

When notching, how much can you take away? I have a 4 x 4 maple post made of two 2 x 4s glued together. Can I notch it to 2 x 4. The posts are about 6 feet apart.

Re: Does spray foam insulation work

I personally don't have any experience with it but if I was having a builder build a new house, I would use it. It has the benefits you mention. Ohter insulation methods require scrupulous work to...

Re: cape cod with no soffits- what to do?

I don't think adding venting will eliminate ice dams. My attic is extremely well vented & I still get ice dams. Builders in my area put ice & water shield on the bottom 8' of an edge and 5' on...

Re: No one is watering the grass?

As opposed to where I live where "chem lawn" is king, I am jealous. We are clogging up the local ponds with algae due to the fertilizers. You spend more time cutting grass that grows wild from the...

    Re: insulation over concrete foundation

Yep, thats what www.buildingscience.com recommends for most climates. Tape the joints of the foam well. I would stop the foam 2" from the floor to allow termite inspections
  9. Re: To Vapor Barrier or Not...That is the question

Never, ever use a vapor barrier in the basement. See www.buildingscience.com for a basement wall construction for your climate. The government pays them to do research.

    Re: Cooling Upstairs Bedrooms?

You can put in central AC in the attic but the heat loss is terrible. Check www.buildingscience.com. What kind of heat do you have? Is it forced hot air? If so, tie the AC into that

Putting in a concrete front porch

I am putting in an 8' x 10' porch that is 21 inches above the dirt around it. The minimum concrete delivery around here is 6 yards. Instead of putting in dirt for fill, I was thinking of just...
