Removing painted over wallpaper?
I am proud first-time homeowner with a large dillema that I only recently discovered. The previous owner painted over wallpaper in almost every room of the house. I'd like to remove it because it is bubbling in some areas. Is removing painted wallpaper any different?
Re: Removing painted over wallpaper?
Paint makes removal a little more difficult, but not impossible. You need to expose the paper backing/glue so that it can be moistened with wall paper stripper. To make your own stripper, mix 1/4 cup of liquid fabric softener into a gallon of warm water and apply with a sponge. Let the solution soak into the paper and glue, it will loosen as it works. The more paper that is exposed, the faster and easier things will go. If you can't pick and pull at a few of the bubbles/loose spots, then you'll need a scoring tool, though if at all possible it is best to avoid using one as it creates more work once the wallpaper is removed.
You'll want to lay out plastic tarps on the floor to minimize mess.
