1940 house wiring
I bought a 1940 built house with two prong outlets. I'm replacing a celing fan the previous owner installed. There are only two wires coming from the celing outlet and both are black. The non-contact voltage tester I bought for $10 lights up on both wires. I noticed this voltage tester lights up on both sides of most receptacles in the house.
Do I have a major problem or is this normal? How should I select a wire for the ceiling fan for hot?
Thanks a lot.
Re: 1940 house wiring
It is quite common to get false readings with non contact testers. They light when ever they see a change in the magnetic field. Use a voltmeter and test to ground or you can use a receptacle tester [URL="http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A9G_bDv5DulIiS8B_hyJzbkF;_ylu=X3oDMTBrNXRjZ21kBHBvcwMxMjQEc2VjA3NyBHZ0aWQD/SIG=1k0q88g3f/EXP=1223319673/**http%3A//images.search.yahoo.com/images/view%3Fback=http%253A%252F%252Fimages.search.yahoo.com%252Fsearch%252Fimages%253Fp%253Delectrical%252Btester%2526js%253D1%2526ni%253D20%2526ei%253DUTF-8%2526y%253DSearch%2526fr%253Dslv8-%2526xargs%253D0%2526pstart%253D1%2526b%253D121%26w=158%26h=300%26imgurl=www.1800anytyme.com%252Fimages_new%252Freceptacle_tester.jpg%26rurl=http%253A%252F%252Felectrical.1800anytyme.com%252Finfo%252Felectrical_tool_guide.php%26size=47kB%26name=receptacle_tester.jpg%26p=electrical%2Btester%26type=JPG%26oid=3a4ffa008d808dc4%26no=124%26tt=12,304%26sigr=1205d56j1%26sigi=11ksehj0e%26sigb=13tiaceat"] by attaching the wires to the prongs.
