How to remove old drain and linkage
My old tub has an old steel drain and broken linkage. How do I remove the linkage and how do I remove the drain from the bottom of the tub. It is steel and seems to be set right in there for life. I would like to replace it with a pop-up stopper but for the life of me I can't figure out how to get the old one out. Does it unscrew so that I can screw in a new pop-up unit? If so, how do I get it started. This is an old but very functional and clean tub - I have put in a new tub surround etc., and this is the last piece I am fighting with.

Your tub drain assembly probably looks similar to this [URL="http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A9G_bDsd151KrhUABRSJzbkF;_ylu=X3oDMTBqOHA2aDgzBHBvcwMyMgRzZWMDc3IEdnRpZAM-/SIG=1j9bgvj5i/EXP=1251944605/**http%3A//images.search.yahoo.com/images/view%3Fback=http%253A%252F%252Fimages.search.yahoo.com%252Fsearch%252Fimages%253Fp%253Dtub%252Bdrain%2526n%253D21%2526b%253D21%2526ni%253D20%2526ei%253Dutf-8%2526y%253DSearch%2526pstart%253D1%2526fr%253Dmcsaoffblock%26w=500%26h=375%26imgurl=static.flickr.com%252F161%252F382316845_8c90b465fa.jpg%26rurl=http%253A%252F%252Fwww.flickr.com%252Fphotos%252Ffixerupper%252F382316845%252F%26size=81k%26name=Tub%2Bdrain%26p=tub%2Bdrain%26oid=b6bbe5c2b9830606%26fr2=%26fusr=fixerupper%26no=22%26tt=9817%26b=21%26ni=20%26sigr=11iof9a4j%26sigi=11ere0pqr%26sigb=13jq1j1pe"]. Some have a nut that turns on the drain basket but others you need to turn the whole short pipe assembly and unscrew it from the drain basket.
