Replace glass only with double pane--keep sash?
Any one out there have experience in replacing only the glass and inserting double pane glass. It might require routing out the sash for some added depth. Bought a 1949 house that has lovely single-pane windows put heating bills are outrageous. There is a good overhang on the roof and the wood around the windows is in very good condition, and have not been overpainted. thanks.

It's hard to tell from the picture if you have enough depth to do what you want. If you have the depth to route the sash frames to accept thicker glass by all means do it. Caulk with silicone a bed joint before putting the glass in place. FYI, the closer the insulated glass is to 1" (overall thickness)the more efficient it is thermally. To really increase efficiency add low-e and gas to the glass units. Good Luck.
