Default Whats the American word for an Acro Prop?

In the UK, we use adjustable steel shafts to take temporary load of beams etc.

They look like this picture shown below:

What the heck to Americans call these? (picture below)

I want to cut out a section of a floor joist to re-inforce it with another joist and my contractor wants to go to all the time and expense to build a temporary wall from lumber.

It seems greener, faster and cheaper to simply throw and acro prop under it and call it good.

I've always called them temporary columns, but I know a lot of people also call them floor jacks.

I call them screw jacks.
It's probably easier and greener(for his wallet) to just build a temp wall instead of buying a tool he doesn't want or thinks he needs.
Usually the means and methods a contractor uses to complete a task is up to him.

I've also heard them called "lally columns", though a quick Internet search suggest that the term should only apply to a concrete-filled, steel pipe column.

They are called jack posts, and excellent name.

By not really knowing the full situation "I want to cut out a section of a floor joist to re-inforce it with another joist and my contractor wants to go to all the time and expense to build a temporary wall from lumber." I would go with the contractor's suggestion, it's his liability and insurance that is involved.

Around here we call them screw jacks .... the picture NEC included we call teleposts.

Hard to say what the situation is but throwing up a temporary wall shouldn't take long or be expensive .... depends.
